I think there is a legitimate argument that there are diseases and injuries for which there is no viable free market solution. There is no cure nor is there likely to be one any time soon and it costs on average $15,000 a year to keep someone with the disease alive and even with that treatment many of them are still not well enough to work most jobs. The only way people with cystic fibrosis get their care now is by basically piggy backing on the health insurance premiums of healthy people or via government assistance, either way they are basically not paying for it themselves and I do not see any way that enough people with cystic fibrosis would be able to afford that treatment on their own to actually maintain a market for the drugs/medical specialists needed to treat it.
What if instead of trying to have the government cover every time a poor kid or elderly person gets the sniffles we instead focused the government health care expenditures on clinics that ONLY treated high cost chronic illnesses and the most severe injuries and removed the necessity for private insurance to have to cover those? Private health insurance would then become downright affordable

He has to give some majority percentage of that to his boss who in turn has to give some majority percentage to his boss etc up the line. Police pay is a pyramid scheme, they don’t actually get a paycheck. The position itself is considered lucrative but the low guys on the pole barely eek by….so when they are issued a 1000$+ piece of equipment, guess what happens to it.

The United States is on track to record another year with a “historically high” number of anti-Semitic incidents, the Anti-Defamation League said Sunday.

Well this Monday started fantastically. TPM light came on while on the way to work. I didn’t think much of it because I have gotten so many false alarms in the past. Though I did just have a tire plugged last week. That one had a nail and a slow leak. Got to work and started manually checking the pressures to come around to the tire opposite of the one recently repaired to find it visibly flat, which means I was driving on the highway with it like that…So now I might have to replace the tire. Great start to the week.

I had a client once who had an old cad program that was only on 5 1/4″ floppies. He had backed up his cad files to a thumb drive, but not the program. So when his PC took a shit, he couldn’t get the old program installed.
Turns out that you have to really fuck with the bios to get a 5 1/4 drive to be recognized by new PC’s. It took us about 3 days to finally get his program saved to new media that he could install.

Yeah, this was some crazy home grown program that they guy bought when he got his first PC for his company. The files were only useful to that program.
The client ran a metal stamping shop. The thing I remember the most is that even in the office the noise was incredible. I can’t even imagine what it must have been like to work in the floor.
There were only a few formats available at the beginning of CAD. In the 2D days, those file types were really simple regardless of which you had. ACAD (not that I’m an expert) was most of the business, and most of those users worked in DWG at first; if you stayed with ACAD, eventually those data were upgraded to newer formats like DXF. When 3D came out, almost everything useful except floor plans was redrawn.
So the archive of old stuff tends to be either DWG files that can be interpreted even by the modern monster programs or even simpler files that aren’t proprietary (DAT? scratches head, forget those formats) that can also be at least viewed by a ton of programs like IGES translators and such, maybe even Adobe.
But the chances that anything terribly useful isn’t on one of these ancient but very readable formats is remote.
As for human nature, the kind of guy who has 30 year old filetypes is unlikely to be very handy or up to speed on contemporary options, so maybe this little project was mostly silly misdirection, like running to the hardware store for a metric crescent wrench.
One thing I know from my time working with computers is that there are a lot more oddball and proprietary formats for everything than you can do on a computer. Many having few, or only one installation using them. When you add in homebrew solutions, that number of formats increases exponentially.
Yes, the output of the major survivors would be readable. But you always dredge up something weird when you are looking at a system that’s been in situ for decades.

I can’t remember all the details, but this was a program that some local guy had written for this shop. It allowed them to create some cad drawings that were then converted to code that could be added to their machines to stamp out the right piece.
Believe me, we would have loved to have found some program that could have dealt with his old files. It would have been so much easier than figuring out how to re-install that old program. We couldn’t even find the original developer to ask them questions.
Shoot, we didn’t even charge him for that work (we were working on other projects with him, this was just a good will kind of a deal).
My friends that do cnc machining all tell me that they use old and dumb computers. You want the bare minimum to make the program run. Less clutter to cause hiccups and quick boot ups. They don’t run anything but the CAD/CAM on them.

On October 16, 2019, Breitbart News reported O’Rourke telling MSNBC that law enforcement will visit the non-compliant to “recover” rifles.

So we record a “death” when Western Europe or Asia would say the baby never lived. When you control for that, the differences are a lot smaller.
Cancer outcomes and surgery outcomes have been widely publicized. There aren’t a lot of people in other countries who if they could get treatment for something major in the U.S. wouldn’t travel there.
I’m more interested in the split in outcomes between private and public health care inside the US.

Yes, an actual diversity of functional capabilities is useful. A diversity of skin colors, genitalia, and sexual preferences is useless unless you’re using it to signal to a target market.

Most of the academic literature I’ve heard of on the topic tends to say demographic diversity is either irrelevant or a net negative.
It’s irrelevent in that it doesn’t provide any positives. It’s a net negative insofar as it encourages hiring less qualified candidates to fill quotas, formal or informal.
My understanding is that the net negative is beyond that. In a large enough group, diversity tends to entail lower levels of trust within teams, lower levels of collaboration, the development of cliques, etc. And this goes beyond demographic diversity. It’s just benefits of a diversity of functional capabilities more than offset the drawbacks.

Assuming diversity is purely identity-based and not competency-based, why would a diverse team perform better? In certain very narrow circumstances, I can see it, mostly around marketing, sales, communication which is directed in part to “diverse” demographics that are reflected on the team. Even in that case, what is really supporting better performance is better competency due to familiarity with the target demographics.
In other circumstances, I can’t think of a single reason why a team would perform better solely because of genitalia, skin tone, national origin, or religious belief.
