Happy Shabbos, you antisemitic goyim! One of my favorite quotes about Goldwater was, “I always knew the first Jewish president of the United States would be Episcopalian.” Ah well, it wasn’t to be. “Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice” was sadly considered nuts.
Birthdays today are an excellent bunch, including my favorite classical composer; my favorite pianist (about whose death a movie ought to be made); the guy beneath SP’s favorite gravestone; a really fun to watch pitcher; a great scowl and mustache (which ought to be the name of a London pub; and a complete piece of shit who left behind some other turds.
Well, with no further delay… links!

Fuck you, Frankie, stick to religion, something you (presumably) know something about.
TSA saves us from the looming danger of butter knives.
We’re working on a fake hate incident against Glibertarians.com to get us some of that sweet, sweet free media exposure. Although calling this a “hate” incident is something of a stretch. It’s a fucking letter.
And today’s Old Guy Music features one of the birthday boys and a long time personal favorite. Although most of his work was in small groups (Coltrane, Kirk, Mingus…), he shows here that he can big band with the best of them. And his composition and arranging skills live up to his playing. My brush-with-fame story: I once saw him at a small club in Baltimore where the turnout was… me and my date. That was it. Maybe the word didn’t get out? Dunno, but he played a whole show for us, played his ass off, and sat with us for drinks during the break between sets. I gushed, “I love your music, I have all your albums!” and he grinned and responded, “Oh, YOU’RE the guy!”

“Happy Shabbos, you antisemitic goyim!”
I’m not antisemetic, you christ-killer!
Yeah, see if I turn any lights on for (((him))) now!
How did he use the internet?
“I always knew the first Jewish president of the United States would be Episcopalian.”
Well, he was a HAM.
Dammit
So Barry was a ham who couldn’t eat ham?
Indeed, there are some ideas so stupid that it takes a PhD to come up with them.
I’ll assume he was one of AOC’s professors.
I came here to say this.
You win this round, Ted’S!
I am all for this plan…. As long as I get to decide what is fake news.
I will be a billionaire inside a year….

“guy beneath SP’s favorite gravestone”
But, but, but he was an outlaw. There will never be another group like the 4, Waylon, Willie, Johnny and Kris… Good to be old and remember (not including the young lady, SP), She’s a kid that learned from OMWC
OMWC has made it his life’s mission to teach young girls the ropes.
It’s a large rope.

She should some of the ones for Russian gangsters.
That’s an unusual photo because the gravestone is actually covered with stuff left by visitors. There’s usually flowers, albums, some bottles of Jack, you name it. And it’s a daily thing- SP visits it at least once a week, and there’s always new stuff.
She visits it at least once a week!?
“(Side note: Waylon is one of two famous people buried in Mesa Cemetery, the other being Ernesto Miranda, who beat the rap after raping a retarded woman because he was not informed of his rights, only to be reconvicted then, after his release, killed in a knife fight. Miranda’s suspected killer elected to remain silent and never faced charges. Ironic, no?)”

Ironic, no
Miranda wouldn’t have been killed if he had something other than 10,000 spoons to defend himself with.
Yes, she has a fascination with graveyards. She posted a photo of Miranda’s gravestone in one of her articles or links posts.

“[The point is] to recognize disinformation as a form of pollution in your news feed just like carbon monoxide in your air supply or dioxin in your water stream,” the professor explained to Campus Reform. “Social media platforms effectively pick up and amplify anything that generates engagement, regardless of whether this creates happiness or harm.”
Van Alstyne emphasized that he does not want to regulate free speech, but instead the consequences of it.
I suppose that would be okay, as long as the right people (like some elite coastal college professors) get to define the harm.
I can only hope that the fucking pendulum starts swinging back.
Too soon – it really needs to swing up a little higher so it comes back with Wile E. Coyote level momentum.
““The simplest definition [of fake news] is information that causes harm at scale,” he said, suggesting that it may have cropped up in the 2016 presidential election and Brexit.”
It’s only for consequences he doesn’t like.
“information that causes harm at scale”
Huh. Interesting that he then used two elections where leftists lost as an example of a harm. Seems to me that the simplest definition of fake news would be news that is false. Like saying Trump was a Russian spy.
That red head sounds fun, but looks high mileage for 25.
She might clean up nice. A dab of paint here, a little spackle there.
That’ll boof out.
“BU business professor Marshall Van Alstyne advocated the approach in a recent BU news release, expanding on the concept in an interview with Campus Reform. Van Alstyne says it is important to note that he does not want the censoring of free speech, but rather an accountability system for harmful fake news.
“You could sample messages, find out some proportion of false and damning information, and then tax in proportion to the damage that’s being done,” Van Alstyne told BU. “What you’re doing is you’re taxing the damage. You’re not taxing the speech.””
Whatever, asshole. With that name shouldn’t you be out hunting vampires?

There oughta be a law! Cuomos et al
We need a constitutional inclusion to prevent a political generational repeat. No children/grandchildren of any politician should be allowed near the handle of power in future generations. Seems like once kids are exposed to the political power it beckons them to want to avoid the responsibility of a productive life.
Moobs Schumer’s parents were an exterminator and homemaker, but that hasn’t stopped him from being in the parasite sector since graduating from law school in 1974. (Six years in the NYS Assembly, 18 in the US house, and the last 20+ in the Senate.)
But then there’s people like RFK Jr who are even worse than their parents. At least he’s incompetent enough to have remained a back bencher, but Cuomo’s progeny continue the damage their father started.
At least he’s incompetent enough to have remained a back bencher

“”My hope is that you’ll give more thought to the question and take down your flag,” the author wrote. “Perhaps then we will reconsider whether we and our family will again come to enjoy Bonefish Harry’s as a restaurant instead of regarding it a misguided ‘virtue-signaling’ establishment.””
Bonefish Harry’s??
“The letter, purportedly signed by “Owen Donaldson,” calls homosexuality “immoral” and accuses the restaurant of “virtue signaling.” It’s dated June 9, one day after the restaurant posted an image of the rainbow flag on its Facebook page.
The Salem News attempted to locate a person by the name of Owen Donaldson living in Beverly or on the North Shore. But a search of public records, including the city clerk’s resident lists for Beverly and several area communities, property records, available phone listings, social media, and a general search of the internet shows no one by that name living in the area.
Gin Wallace, the executive director of Beverly Main Streets, which was tagged in the restaurant’s original post on Wednesday, said the group has heard from people in the community in support of Bonefish Harry’s.
“I think this is an isolated incident,” said Wallace. “I haven’t seen or heard from any other business.”
The question of whether or not the letter is authentic “never even crossed my mind,” she said.
“I’d hate to have to question the validity of the letter,” said Wallace. “That’s not the point. That’s not what we should be angry or unnerved about. I hope people are focusing on the right message here.””

I would like to say that meeting Tonio and Chipwooder was a very pleasant experience and that they are very normal, absolutely normal, the normalest people.
I would also like to say thank you to Chipwooder for the extra rations this morning and that Tonio’s basement is very nice.
Again, they’re very normal.

“Tonio’s basement is very nice”
Was it set up like a BDSM dungeon or a gay disco?
It’s very nicely appointed. The custom drapes make it so you don’t even notice the iron bars.
That’s nice. How do you get so many bars at the bottom of that well?
I’m assuming it’s waterproof and soundproof.

Why not both?

“On the last episode of Southern Charm, there are nine seconds of Kathryn Dennis vaping during a confessional that could easily be labeled Iconic (with a capital I) as soon as they happened. In fact, we went ahead and did just that. It’s rare to see the stars of reality TV shows vaping on TV, even when they’re living their lives out in the wild, but especially when they’re talking to the camera in a studio during those confessional moments. And we’re not the only ones that realized what a significant moment this was, either. We spoke to Southern Charm executive producer and showrunner Jessica Chesler about that long, satisfying drag from Dennis and the accompanying comment that had us clapping at our screens.”

Gig ekkkonomy bad
People who understand labor issues have long understood that the most direct and effective way to break this modern-day indentured servitude with a smile is to force these modern day companies to classify their workers as employees. All these companies have done is to find a nifty way to save themselves billions of dollars by circumventing U.S. labor and employment law, which was designed with “employees” in mind. Update the laws and the system will once again work, at least on a very basic level, as it is supposed to.
———-
I sincerely hope that what I am about to say is already obvious to anyone empowered to be involved in negotiation legal, political, or labor policy, but: The one thing they don’t want to give you is the thing that you need to get. This offer from Uber and Lyft is like a kidnapper offering you a softer blanket, as long as you agree not to ever escape. No thanks. These companies know very well that once their workers become actual employees, they will get a host of benefits automatically, and they can formally unionize to win themselves many more benefits and increased pay. These companies, which have never made a dollar even while exploiting their workers, fear this. So they offer some concessions.
The fact that they are offering means that there is more to be had. Get the thing they don’t want to give you. Please god do not fuck this one up.
That job sucks. I’d rather see you starve.
I love how these idiots can be so willfully (gleefully) obtuse about the origin of Uber and Lyft. The actual service provided by the company is not the ride, itself. It is the intermediary service of helping the driver and rider find one another. But some people cannot wrap their heads around the idea of independence. They also cannot wrap their heads around how government regulation turned the taxi business into such a shitshow that Uber and Lyft could arise in such a spectacular and rapid way.
Hamilton Nolan- why is that name familiar?
He’s one of the guys who cheered Rand Paul getting beat up for wrongthink.
I always thought of things like Uber, Lyft, and Etsy as best used for extra money on the side work. But detractors seem to think it can only be used for full-time sole job work.
If they wanted to drive people around full-time, I wonder why they aren’t already cab drivers.
It’s getting harder to get Crown Vic’s in good condition.
Pssst and don’t tell them the King’s service workers don’t get “a host of benefits” either.
They’re great for that. They could also be great for someone who has lost their job and needs SOME income while they look for another one.
I did a lot of article writing on gig sites, and it was a great way for me to earn money in addition to my full-time job without having to commit to a part-time job.
It fucking pisses me off that Lefties want policies that they know will destroy the business model of these companies, thus depriving countless people of an excellent way to make money in their spare time.
5 bucks says splinter news pays writers on a per article basis with no benefits.
Up here the Provincial Government keeps kicking the can back and forth with the Insurance provider, also Government controlled. They are scared shitless of the South Asian voting block that also has control of the taxi industry. No ride-sharing here for the immediate future.
Up here they are scared shitless of the South Asian lobby which controls the taxi industry. The government keeps kicking the can down the road to the insurance corporation which is of course, government owned. There will be no ride-sharing in BC for the foreseeable future.
Thanks 504, thanks a bundle.

Who will take the giant leap for womankind?
More than fifty years after the end of the Apollo program, NASA plans to return to the Moon by 2024 as a “proving ground” to test the next generation of spacecraft ahead of an eventual crewed mission to Mars.
The new program has been named Artemis after Apollo’s twin-sister in Greek mythology, and the space agency has said that the mission will see the first woman to stride the lunar surface.
So, who will she be? No one knows for sure, but it’s a likely bet the candidate will be selected from among NASA’s current roster of 12 female astronauts.
What’s a few billion dollars, in the quest for gender equity?
We’re finally going to get Amazon women on the Moon.

Don’t give up the
shipnarrative!…some Republican lawmakers were quick to respond, taking Trump’s comments as an opportunity to criticize the Clinton campaign, which indirectly financed a dossier created by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer, that examined Trump’s ties to Russia. Graham said Democrats’ criticism of Trump’s comments should be met with “equal outrage.”
There are clear differences between Steele — who had previously been a trusted FBI informant — and an offer of dirt on Clinton coming from the Russian government. Before the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting, Donald Trump Jr. was told that a Russian lawyer could provide valuable information as part of the Kremlin’s effort to help Trump.
Another big difference: Russia was conducting an unprecedented attack on the US election, while Steele was trying to warn Americans about the attack. Trump campaign officials comingled with prominent Russians while the Kremlin was intervening in the election. The Clinton campaign indirectly paid Steele, who unearthed evidence of the attack and brought it to the FBI and tried to share it with the press.
Let’s not bicker about ‘oo spied on ‘oo. Let’s all just agree to call Trump the worst of the worst.
That’s probably the most generous description of Steele I’ve read yet.
“Russia was conducting an unprecedented attack on the US election”
Unprecedented?
Hey, CNN said so. Who are we to question it?
Banana. Republic.
I think we can more strongly argue that the US Government itself was conducting an unprecedented attack on the US election.
It was more of an attack than Boris and Natasha buying a few Facebook ads, but still not unprecedented.
Definitely, I believe I may have caused a misunderstanding. What I meant to say was that the US Government attempting to thwart/attack the election in 2016 was more unprecedented than some memes and attempted honeypots.
Agreed.
They didn’t know that the law firm was going to use the money they paid them to pay a foreign national to SEEK OUT intel from a foreign government. It was just a thing that happened to happen.
Some people did something.
Watching them trot out ever more nonsensical arguments as the truth slowly leaks out is getting interesting.
The funniest part is that the Steele information was complete bunk whereas the information the “Russians” (if they were actually the ones behind the hacks, still very much an open question) dropped was completely accurate. Hell just rewrite the column about how the heroic Russians were trying to warn us how corrupt Hillary was by rigging the DNC primary and it would be closer to the truth.
Correct, there are clear differences. One campaign wasn’t looking for dirt and shut down the Russians after one meeting. The other campaign went specifically looking for dirt. And once they received it they delivered it to the government to try (and succeed) in using it to spy on the opposition political campaign. It’s correct, they aren’t the same thing. One is much worse than the other.
taking Trump’s comments as an opportunity to criticize the Clinton campaign,
Trump with an assist picked up, for once, by other Repubs. Nice way to get the “uhh, the only campaign that used dirt from the Russian government was Hillary’s, you know”. And they’ve even got the DemOp dimwits taking the next step for them – admitting that Hillary didn’t just use oppo from Russia, she actually commissioned and paid for it.
I still can’t get past the idea that the extent of this alleged “election interference” was the release of factual information that made the Democrat Party look bad.
Good morning, Old Man.

Yeah, it’s an investigative documentary that’s begging to be made.
Lesbo assault:
This may be pedantic, but I thought “rape” had a very specific definition of forcible penetration.
There was no such thing described in that article. In fact, detailed descriptions of exactly what kind of sexual activity the two nubile young coeds got up to was conspicuously missing. I would also have expected some kind of reenactment; perhaps featuring porn stars experienced in such things. Terrible reporting.
“This may be pedantic”
Pedantry? Here?!?
Fetch me my fainting couch!
Actually, that’s a divan, not a fainting couch.
The FBI changed the definition.
https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/news/pressrel/press-releases/attorney-general-eric-holder-announces-revisions-to-the-uniform-crime-reports-definition-of-rape
“The new definition of rape is: “The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.””
According to the article the accused put her fingers in the alleged victim.
They used the word “hand” …. And blood was mentioned.
I was referring to the Daily Mail article. I posted this pull quote, and asked if there were injuries why didn’t she go to the police sooner.
But apparently my comment got eaten.
“The alleged assailant is also accused of forcefully putting her fingers inside the accuser’s vagina.
The action was so aggressive that it caused the woman to bleed.
When the alleged victim verbally expressed that she did not like what was happening, Thakur reportedly pushed her to the ground and she was finally free.
The accuser reported the incident to college officials 13 days later, on May 29. She went to the police on June 6.”
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7143131/Co-ed-charged-raping-female-roommate-Susquehanna-University.html
That’s the same kind of rape the Stanford swimmer was guilty of.
Ummm…don’t mean to be pedantic myself, but that ain’t forcible or graphic enough for ya? You must be spoiled on SF.
I was just under the impression that it was specifically defined as penetration with the penis, but apparently the definition has been changed per Count’s link. None of that excuses what happened…
…though I’m sure SF could have done a lot with that framework.
Look at the shitlord who in current year believes women are incapable of raping someone just as well as a man can.
Outrage machine, at full throttle!
One Twitter user said of Kennedy Onassis, “Don’t EVER compare her to Melania.”
“Jackie O was the epitome of grace & beauty,” the Twitter user wrote. “She overcame a plethora of hardships & heartaches, with poise and elegance. She was an incredible First Lady & an even more marvelous woman. She balanced passions + duties, and did so with class.”
——–
“There is no way in hell I’d use her and our beloved Jackie O’s name in the same sentence!” another Twitter user opined. “Unless, of course, it’s to show the glaring lack of ANYTHING in common.”
Another Twitter user said Melania Trump could not measure up to Kennedy Onassis while her predecessor Michelle Obama did.
“This is what the new Jackie O look like,” the user tweeted along with a photo of former President Barack Obama’s wife.
Other Twitter users slammed the president for referring to Melania Trump as “it.”
“First. Melania couldn’t be Jackie O’ if she received a personality transplant,” another Twitter user wrote. “Second, Trump’s statement betrays his objectification. He said, ‘it’s Melania, Melania Trump’ IT’S, not SHE’s. If he were talking about a golf champion, it’s makes sense, but not in this context.”
Needz moar steam! Stoke that boiler!
They’re kind of right though. Melania is no Jackie O. She’s waaaaaaaay hotter and has accomplished something other than fucking rich, famous dudes.
On first glance, Melania would seem to have far more in common with Jackie as the long suffering wife of a philanderer.
Cats with a laser pointer, every time.
Second, Trump’s statement betrays his objectification. He said, ‘it’s Melania, Melania Trump’ IT’S, not SHE’s.
Let’s go to the tape:
In his usual bumbling way, Trump manages to make a decent point awkwardly. This was about changing the paint scheme on Air Force One, with the current paint scheme using a light blue supposedly coming from Jackie Kennedy. The “it” is a bleary and out of focus reference, initially to the paint scheme, and then to “something”, which is probably meant to be a reference to “iconic first lady” or something. Its Trump, who knows, exactly. Note how you can say “Its Trump” and it doesn’t sound odd.
Final ruling, subject to appeal: Trump is not just super articulate, but is not referring to his wife as a thing, he is referring to her role/image as a thing. Kind of like how Trump’s persona as a babbling blowhard is a thing.
Nobody linked any Waylon music, yet? I am disappoint!

Some PAWGs in there, but that’s okay too. Anyways, 16, 24, and 32 for fun snoo-snoo times.
The girl I lost my virginity to was definitely a PAWG so I will always have a special place in my heart for the “more cushion for the pushin'” crowd. Oddly, she had pretty small tits, but at that age you’ll take anything you can get.
It’s all good and yep, bless our lizard brains for the places they take us.

I’m sure addiction is fueling this problem. Clearly what we’re doing isn’t working so I can see three options:
1) Loosen legal restrictions to destigmatize and provide private assistance to these people.
2) Drastically tighten legal restrictions and throw all these people in cages.
3) Remove all forms of assistance and let them die in the street.
Option 1 sure seems the most humane, but it would remove a lot of bureaucracy and opportunities for rent-seeking so we all know that’s not going to happen.
Bless them for doing lots of great work but man, they have a gigantic blind spot on drugs. They been pushing an anti-pot narrative the last few months that’s straight out of Nancy Reagan territory.
Blind spot is right. I’ve often asked prohibitionist friends and relatives, what are the bad things about taking drugs? And they always start listing off things that are a result of drugs being illegal, not the drug itself. The ones that aren’t mostly just hurt the drug user and nobody else. Even after pointing this out, and them agreeing, they just can’t see it and fall back on “drugs are bad, mmkay?” It’s extremely frustrating.

In an email to the Oberlin community on Friday, Carmen Twillie Ambar, the college president, said that the case was far from over, and that “none of this will sway us from our core values.”
Oberlin tried to distance itself from the protesters in court papers, saying it should not be held responsible for their actions. It blamed the store for bringing its problems on itself.
“Gibson bakery’s archaic chase-and-detain policy regarding suspected shoplifters was the catalyst for the protests,” the college said. “The guilt or innocence of the students is irrelevant to both the root cause of the protests and this litigation.”
“Facts are irrelevant” is not exactly the sort of stance I would expect a college president to take. Not publicly, anyway.
I’m sure at this point some lawyer has told them to STFU, they should probably listen.
These people really are that disconnected from reality.
A half-decent lawyer would have briefed the entire staff and faculty with “you will not make any public statement related to the case” as soon as the lawsuit dropped. They’re so arrogant that they think they still have public opinion on their side. The Townies that just rekt them with maximum damages seem to dispute that.
“archaic chase-and-detain”
No fair, fighting back against crime. They should just eat the costs and cover it with their endowment. What…they don’t have an endowment. Stupid hicks.
Actually, during the trial it was brought up that Gibson’s losses a significant amount more in theft while students are in session then when they are on break. Maybe Oberlin more wants to protect it’s students.
Those kids were probably just hungry.
This was never about “chase and detain”. It was always about not letting black people get away with crimes. I would bet there is approximately zero reference to chase and detain at the protests or in the contemporaneous discussions and communications about the incident and the protests.
You know, I don’t expect people not to lie to me, but I do expect them to at least put a little effort into making it plausible.

No, because as a tech billionaire on Joe Rogan’s show said “The Radical Left has won the culture war, now they’re just driving around shooting survivors.” I don’t consider myself a conservative, but I do know that every single time the Hard Left has seized power in a nation, liberty immediately goes down the toilet.

Education officials at other schools said the case was unique. “This is a fact-specific case,” said Peter McDonough, vice president and general counsel of the American Council on Education, a trade and advocacy group for university presidents. “It is premature to draw conclusions about broader ramifications for other campuses and all of higher education.”
The punitive damages are likely to be reduced to $22 million because state law caps the amount at twice the compensatory damages. Still, the total judgment of $33 million could be a financial blow to Oberlin.
It may be premature to draw conclusions, but I sure hope there are some college administrators losing sleep over this. Maybe some contemplative self-examination in a few faculty lounges, as well,
Question for those who identify as concrete experts:
I need a slab at least 6″ thick for a machine I am considering purchasing. I don’t know how thick my garage floor is, but I suspect it’s the standard 3″-4″. Also, it was a do-it-yourself project of a previous owner and let’s just say it’s not quite as level as he probably hoped.
TL;DR: Can I just pour a new 3″ thick slab on top of the current slab to make sure I have 6″. (no euphemism)
For a little more info, here is from the machine manufacturer:
The concrete must be poured directly on the grade.
The concrete must be 3,500 psi (240 bar) at 28-day strength.
The concrete aggregate must be 1″ (25 mm) mix.
The steel reinforcement must be 40 ksi (2700 bar) tensile strength.
The excavation must be cut near flat ground. Remove any loose material in the excavation. This prevents settling.
Follow all local building codes and regulations.
Continuous slab
But, these are their standard requirements, and the machine I’m looking at is the smallest (lightest) of their line, so I’m wondering if I can get away with less. For instance, a larger machine that weighs 14,700lbs has the exact same floor specs as the one I’m looking at, which weighs 4,900. Maybe my floor is already thick enough and I’d just have to level it…?
So, posting this question spurred me to look at some things that I should have before posting. Each leveling pad on this would hold about 1200lbs. As I mention above, they recommend the same floor thickness for a much larger machine and it’s leveling pads will be supporting 2400lbs each.
So, if 6″ is fine for 2400, shouldn’t my (assumed) 3″ slab support 1200?
I wouldn’t imagine that it’s directly proportional like that., but again, not an engineer or a concrete guy
No, probably not.
I guess instead of their generic requirements, I should just figure out what I would need to support the specific weight of this lathe.
Not a concrete guy, but I’d be a little concerned about the weight of the new slab if the old one wasn’t done correctly? Is the existing slab in good shape?
It is in good shape. No cracks. Just a very poor screeding job. The building was up before the concrete was poured and I think that complicated things for him.
Not a concrete expert, but I can identify as one (hey it’s 2019!). I would think 3 inches wouldn’t be enough. The different expansion and contraction between the two layers would probably cause major issues over time. I’d think you’d want a thicker layer one top. Also, I’m not sure two 3″ layers would be as strong as one 6″ layer. Again, not an engineer or expert, just thoughts off the top of my head.
No expert, but I would say no. Where the new concrete meets the original slab is going to be a vector for a separation fracture. (Luk at all dem big werds I dun used, eyuk)
Could you drill a perimeter of holes into the ground down below the floor and put in posts to support the machine? Think house on stilts.
Similar concept as this.
https://www.technometalpost.com/en-CA/advantages/helical-piles/
My original comment sounded more secretive than necessary. A CNC lathe is what I’m looking at. To wit; I don’t think that would be best. It needs to be on one slab to help maintain level.
What about cutting a perimeter with concrete saw. Jackhammer out existing concrete. Digging down and putting in thicker slab in that section? Shouldn’t take that long and you could probably rent tools at hardware store. Use a mask though.
I always wear a mask whenever I do carpentry. So no one knows who did it.
Would it be too difficult to just find a level spot and put the machine where you want. If it cracks or breaks after that, move the machine and poor new concrete then?
I’m leaning towards this. IT’s just that moving a 4900lb machine again won’t be fun.
Pick a spot, drill a test bore, see how thick the concrete is. Maybe have somebody who knows this stuff take a look and tell you what they think.
Keep in mind, manufacturer specs are going to be significantly over-engineered*. Its not their money they are saying you should spend, but it could be their money if there’s a problem later.
*Now, I like me some over-engineering, but there’s still a cost/benefit to be done.
Agreed the manufacturer’s spec is going to be significantly overengineered for the big lathe which makes it way way overengineered for your application.
I believe there are places which will test how strong concrete is. I don’t think it necessarily involves boring a hole in the concrete. I don’t know how much it will cost.
You could also research the building codes for when the concrete pad was built. Even if no permit was pulled, it will give you some idea of how strong the concrete is supposed to be.
Of course the real engineer’s solution would be to tear down the house and rebuild it such that you could put the biggest lathe they make in any room you want? 🙂
I’m going to chime in with the non-expert experts here and say it would be better just to take out the three inches in the space the machine is going and pour a new six inch in that spot. If it needs to be level with existing floor to roll machine onto it I would dig it out to six there.
This option is on the table. I’d prefer not to (there is as of now unused in-floor heating pipes in it) but it is an option.
OK. This lathe weighs less (4900) than the advertised curb weight of my pickup (5266). Am I worrying about nothing?
If you’re parking vehicles currently on the slab you are probably okay, although their weight would likely be a bit more dispersed. Just make sure to check the thermostat on the lathe if it’s a used one before you get it in place.
Good point. The pads on this are only 48″ apart one direction and 28″ the other way.
*nods head knowingly* Sage advice.
I’m an engineer but not a civil one so this is way out my area of expertise. Something you could do is put pads underneath the legs to disperse the weight over a bigger area. I would use something strong enough so it doesn’t deform under the weight of the machine.
I _just_ watched the Haas video posted yesterday(?) and the feet of the CNC lathes look about the same size as a contact-patch on a tire, albeit in steel. So I assume it’d be same PSI weight as your truck – but Id think no downside to adding pads to spread it out a bit.
/IANAE
It’ll probably be a little smaller footprint, so the impact zone would be tighter.
I put safes that had worse pounds per square foot on a slab like that though.
Yes, any requirements that they have are vastly overdone because they don’t want people calling them and complaining about cracked concrete. I would stop worrying and if you have to deal with it later, you will.
I like the way you think.
No one has ever said that to me before . . It’s usually what the hell is wrong with you?
So is this related to the Haas video you posted yesterday? MikeS Machining, LLC, perhaps?
Very astute of you.
I’m in the VERY early stages of collecting info on start-up cost and potential work. I’ll likely be asking for more advice from the Glibertariat in the future. Especially from people who have been involved with starting a business. Know anyone like that Tundra? ?
This is the cute little guy I’m looking at.
i work in a related field. When you are up and running, I’ll come be a VP at your company. And I promise, I’ll only spend about half the day on the internet.
10hp! Did you get your electrical upgraded yet?
You have the choice of:
220 1 phase (which I have)
220 3 phase
440 3 phase
But, and stick with me here, if you upgrade the electrical (“But honey, its much safer with the 440. Besides, its deductible as a business expense.”), you have opened the door to other awesome heavy duty tools and equipment.
Ha-ha. For sure. I am going to get at least a ball park estimate of pulling 3 phase in, but I’m not holding my breath. I live in the country and the closest farm that I guess it might be at is 2 miles away. That’s a lot of wire to pay for digging in.
Even if you stick with 220, make sure you have enough current.
That’s something else I will be getting confirmation of, Count. It’s full load amp rating is only 40amps, though, so I am assuming I’ll be fine…?
10HP = 7460 Watts
7460W/240V = 31A
You need a 20% overhead
31A x 1.2 = 37A service. Round it up and 40A covers it.
Great info. Thanks, Hobbit!

A loonball who was going to start WW3. They tried the same thing with Reagan, but it didn’t stick.
He lost that election but paved the way for Reagan.
Which is huge irony, since Reagan vastly increased the size, scope, and power of government and never let the constitution get in the way.
Was there a President that didn’t do that?
Coolidge, mostly.
Largely agree. Ronnie was, sadly, no Goldwater.
Wow. Things really haven’t changed a bit.
Yep, it’s fun to read a bit about how the media has really always been a bunch of partisan hacks (not that surprising to most here really). Amazing how many psychiatrists would go against a bedrock principle of their profession just to play to their Team.
That lead to the “Goldwater rule”: “it is unethical for psychiatrists to give a professional opinion about public figures whom they have not examined in person, and from whom they have not obtained consent to discuss their mental health in public statements”.
That was recently amended to include “Unless they’re an icky Republican”.
“They don’t pay bills in Russia. It’s all free.”
Think about it. When Bernie is President, there won’t be any such crime as shoplifting.

Agreed. I wish more stores would chase down shoplifters. I assume the stores are worried about liability if the employee or the shoplifter get hurt.
Fun youth story: At about 15 years old, a group of about 6 friends of mine went for the evening. We were hanging out at the movie theater. After a movie, we went over to the newly opened Wal-Mart and screwed around. It was a great night. I had a buddy get in one of the dog houses in front of the store and bark at people as they walked by. Other harmless shenanigans happened as well. Rumor had it that you definitely didn’t want to steal from there, they were watching. At the end of the night we needed to find a ride home (no one in the group drove yet). They wanted me to call my mom since we had the full size van that would hold all of us. I, being a brat, wanted anyone else to pick us up. After some discussion, a couple of my friends went to the pay phone to call my mom to pick us up. The rest of us started walking back to the movie theater for pickup. The two that called my mom decided to steal a swimsuit calendar on the way out the door. They came running by us on their way to the theater. Following them in full speed chase was the Wal-Mart plainclothes security guard. The guard grabbed my friend and dragged him back to the store. My mother showed up and asked where Scotty was. We told her. She went in and tried to bust him out. They wouldn’t let him go. His mother finally came and they didn’t press charges. They did permanently ban him from all Wal-Mart stores.

One of these days, we’ll get it right, honest!
We’ve seen 150 shootings in the first 150 days of 2019. And more than 100 days have passed with Senate Republicans refusing to debate and vote on universal background check legislation that the House has already advanced.
In the last decade, we have seen students and educators gunned down in school shootings in Parkland and Newtown. Parishioners murdered in a church in Charleston. A massacre at an outdoor music venue in Las Vegas. A nightclub in Orlando. A theater in Aurora. A mall in Burlington. A college in Blacksburg. A church in Sutherland Springs.
It’s a catastrophic list of outrages against our nation, and it just scratches the surface.
It doesn’t begin to capture the lives lost every day to incidents of urban and domestic gun violence, which rarely make headlines.
——–
One thing is clear: the laws on the books are insufficient and an ineffective deterrent. The proof is in the ever-increasing death toll, and an overwhelming majority of Americans now agrees we should implement stricter gun regulations. But sadly, too many of our Republican colleagues continue to block change and allow the gun lobby to write our laws.
“150 shootings in 150 days”? I’d like to see a little more specificity on that.
We just need to be more like those other countries which have no established Constitutional limits on the power of their governments. We’re shredding as fast as we can, but those dumb old Rethuglitards keep dragging their feet.

FreedomToons did a good debunking of these inflated “school shooting” statistics that get bandied around among Lefties.
I don’t doubt that “150 shootings in 150 days” is reached by using the same screwy metrics.
We just need to do what we did for drugs and we will quickly end the scourge of gun violence. Declare a War on Guns and make them illegal, just like heroin or cocaine. We eliminated the use of illegal drugs in this country in short order, and as a result now have one of the lowest prison populations in the world and have saved untold billions on law enforcement. When was the last time you heard of anyone doing an illegal drug in the USA?
>>It’s a catastrophic list of outrages against our nation
well boo fucking hoo
The proof is in the ever-increasing death toll,
Ima need to see the numbers on that. By rate, you have to take a shortish timeline; 2017 is basically tied with 2007.
I’m going to guess that _those_ shootings don’t count, because $REASONS
Because those people are completely unaffected by background checks and other legal niceties?

Fake news. Everyone in Texas has a gun.
A proposal with even more public support is universal background checks. Ninety-seven percent of Americans support background checks – including a majority of gun owners. But right now, anyone can go to a gun show or online and buy a gun with no background check at all.

“House Republicans move to permanently remove gun-free school zones from federal law
Earlier this week, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) introduced the “Safe Students Act,” which would repeal the “Gun-Free School Zones Act,” thereby eliminating what the congressman’s office calls a “one-size-fits-all federal ban on guns in school zones” and making it easier for local authorities to set their own gun policies.
The Gun-Free School Zones Act was passed in 1990 and makes it “unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” The original law was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1995 on interstate commerce grounds and later amended by Congress.”

Unfortunately, I doubt it could pass.

Hell, it couldn’t have passed before the Dems took the House. Paul Ryan (Cuck-WI) would never have let it reach the floor.
Fun with numbers
Research shows that a majority of guns in Mexico can be traced to the U.S. A report from the U.S Government Accountability Office showed that 70 percent of guns seized in Mexico by Mexican authorities and submitted for tracing have a U.S. origin. This percentage remains consistent, said Bradley Engelbert, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. And the Trump has administration has recently taken steps to ease rules on gun exports, which enables manufacturers to sell guns in Mexico and Central America countries.
A report from the Center of American Progress found that the United States was the primary source of weapons used in crime in Mexico and Canada.
If they expect a “trace” to be successful, they submit it. If they don’t…
Voila! Mexican crime guns are coming from the U S.
Geez, Fast and Furious was way more successful than I thought.
I would think “a US origin” and “primary source of weapons” would capture any gun made in the US. OMG, countries without a gun industry tend to get their guns from a neighboring country with a big gun industry.
EVEN IF it were true that the American civilian gun market were a significant source of guns for Mexican criminals, why would that be the United States’ problem? If a country bans something but fails to stop it at their own border, that’s their own issue.
By that logic, gay pornography should be illegal in the US because some guy in Saudi Arabia might be looking it up on the Internet.
Maybe they should build a wall.

Trump’s recent threat to impose tariffs on Mexican imports once again put his immigration policy front and center, with much of the focus on the issue of migrants attempting to enter the U.S.
During the standoff, which led to a deal between the two countries that avoided new tariffs, Arturo Sarukhan, a former Mexican ambassador to the U.S., suggested a different idea for stemming the flow of migrants.
“The U.S. should immediately stop the flow of guns and bulk cash across its southern border,” Sarukhan wrote in a tweet.
Wut?
——–
On paper it’s significantly harder to legally purchase a firearm in Mexico than it is in the United States. So if it’s so difficult to buy a gun in Mexico, where do all of the country’s guns come from? The answer has as much if not more to do with U.S. gun policy than with Mexico’s, though the issue is rarely brought up in America’s political debates over gun control and border security.
The right to own guns is in Mexico’s constitution, as it is in the U.S., but Mexican gun laws are highly restrictive. The Mexican army is the only entity allowed to sell guns in the country, either to private security firms, private citizens or to local police. In fact, there is only one legal gun store in the country, which is also run by the Mexican army and located in Mexico City. Assault weapons and any weapon more powerful than a .38 caliber gun is banned from personal use, with few exceptions. Only the military is allowed to use high-powered firearms.
Strict gun laws don’t prevent murder? I wonder if Diane Feinstein and Chris Murphy have heard about this.
So Mexico has already travelled the “You have the right to own a gun, you just don’t have the right to purchase a gun. Oh, and you can only own a gun that is legally purchased.” path.
OK, two things. If there’s two things….
I’ll get the comfy chair ready.
?
The low approval rate for gun applications is even more striking. The Secretariat of National Defense, Mexico’s equivalent to the U.S. Department of Defense and the government agency in charge of issuing gun licenses, reported a 30 percent increase in gun license applications between 2013 and 2018. The agency received 55,567 applications, but only 218 licenses were issued. Between 2007 and 2012, 42,431 applications were reported.
Gun manufacturers in other countries, such as Germany, also supply weapons to Mexico. But lax U.S. gun laws and proximity to Mexico are key factors that drive guns south from the United States. An ongoing study of arms trafficking to Mexico and other Latin American countries, conducted by the Violence Policy Center, shows that military-style semi-automatic firearms comprise the majority of weapons smuggled south. These can be easily purchased in the United States, and are often harder to buy legally in other countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, where automatic weapons are banned for civilians.
Goddammit, what a convoluted mishmash of lies, half-truths, and non sequiturs. Don’t these people have editors or fact checkers?
Fuck you, PBS.
Why, its almost like crushing the legal market for something creates a black market. I think I need a seven-figure grant to study this.
Shorter PBS:
“Every bad thing that happens anywhere in the world is the USA’s fault.”
What’s a military-style semi-automatic firearm? I mean, I know the author means a black cerakoted pistol, but if you tried to make that a meaningful phrase, what would it refer to? In my mind, “military-style” tends to mean capable of selective fire, so that rules out semi-auto weapons. Then I’d probably add that it would have to be relatively common and use a common NATO round. Not terribly pretty because it’s going to be banged up a lot.
“Military style” is an absurd media/political buzzword.
There needs to be a series of sit-down interviews with anti-gun politicians where they are asked:
– A clear definition of terms like assault weapon, military style, and high capacity
– Which guns they believe are most dangerous and why
– An explanation of basic firearms terminology like full-auto, semi-auto, etc.
It would do wonders for gun rights to shed light on their complete ignorance of firearms.
There are several good pictures in Powerline’s Week In Pictures
I quite like this one
Loopholes within loopholes-
In many cases, “traffickers will run a ring of straw buyers,” said Kristen Rand, the legislative director for the Violence Policy Center. “The traffickers are exploiting the background check system because they just find people who can have the background check, and as long as they don’t raise suspicion with the dealer, then it’s difficult to identify that this is illegal.”
Straw buyers also evade suspicion typically by avoiding buying guns in bulk. Instead of going to stores and buying 20 or 40 guns at a time, straw buyers often buy only one or two weapons, Rand said.
We cannot allow this “background check” loophole to continue.
Well, if Kristen’s having difficult identifying illegal sales maybe she should call Eric Holder. He seemed to have no trouble finding illegal purchases headed south of the border.
You mean to tell me that criminals will break the law to run their businesses? I think I need another seven-figure grant to study this.
I’d be a good research assistant. Starting in the low 6 figures range.
Russell Wilson is on my box of Wheaties. How un-woke. When will we finally see a transgender female champion athlete take her rightful place?
Needz moar scare quotes.
Equality will not be achieved until we have athletes from all 75 genders on the Wheaties box.
PS: Since typing that, the number of genders has been updated to 81.
